RVN opened the scoring and United went in at half time one up.

However, after the break the Old Trafford side went goal crazy scoring a further four times, with three goals arriving in the last ten minutes of the match.

Ole netted after about the hour mark and United got three in the last ten minutes.

RVN got his second on 82, Giggs got his second in two games more or less straight after. Diego finished the scoring off near the end.

Rio, with a slight thigh strain, Barthez, as well as Scholes were all injured.

Fergie on MUTV:

"We scored a few goals in the second half but I didn't think we had the form or the tempo to the game we had against Parma. We could have lost a few goals so it wasn't the greatest performance.

"They had a side that were all trying to impress because a lot of those players were looking for clubs and they were resilient and stubborn."

And on Forlan: "He made a good run for his goal and placed it nicely in the corner. I always think that scoring a goal is helpful. He impressed me immensely."

On Beckham: "He's fine. I think he's shown he's back to his best. His form has been good, he's passing is good and his fitness levels are very good."

About Rio: "He got a little strain in his thigh in training and with a big game coming up there was no point."
