Anthony Martial agrees wage cut to edge closer to Sevilla loan

Manchester United forward Anthony Martial has moved a step closer to joining Sevilla on loan for the rest of the season, with the Spanish club eyeing a first La Liga title since 1945.

Martial, whose desire to leave Old Trafford has been confirmed by both his agent and interim United boss Ralf Rangnick, has struggled for form in the past 18 months since an impressive 23-goal season in 2019/20. Injuries have also played a role in keeping him out of the team.

It was recently confirmed that the Frenchman didn’t wish to be selected for United’s matchday squad against Aston Villa, although Rangnick praised his contribution to the winning goal after coming off the bench against West Ham on Saturday.

Juventus and Sevilla have both shown serious interest in signing Martial in recent weeks but it is now the latter that look set to get a deal over the line.

It was the numbers initially holding up a proposed move to Spain, but 90min understands Martial has now agreed to reduce his wages in order to make the deal possible.

Both Juve and Sevilla have been in talks with United and the Old Trafford club are happy for him to join either. The Italian giants offered more, although Martial has opted for Sevilla.

The Andalusians are just four points off the top of La Liga, having fallen away at the end of last season to finish fourth. A strong second half of the campaign has the potential to deliver a first Spanish league title in over 75 years, while they will also fancy their chances of winning a record seventh Europa League title ahead of facing Dinamo Zagreb in the first knockout round next month.

Martial joined United from Monaco in September 2015 for an initial fee of £36m potentially rising to £58m. He scored a famous debut goal against Liverpool and has since netted 79 times in 269 appearances across all competitions since. His contract runs to 2024 with an option until 2025.
