Anthony Martial 'must give more' after underwhelming Sevilla debut

Sevilla manager Julen Lopetegui has confessed that he was not best pleased with Anthony Martial's eagerly awaited debut for the club on Sunday.

Having joined on loan from Manchester United in January to much fanfare, Martial made his first start for Sevilla in Friday's goalless draw with Osasuna but failed to make any real impact and was substituted 15 minutes before the end of the game.

"Of course, Martial must give us much more," Lopetegui said. "He needs to adapt and figure out the dynamics of the team. Obviously, he hasn't played a lot this year, but I'm confident he will figure out how we play soon."

There is no option for Sevilla to buy Martial permanently as part of this loan contract, with United hopeful that a temporary spell away from Old Trafford could help him rediscover his best form in time for the 2022/23 season.

Martial himself has refused to rule out staying in Spain beyond this season, saying: "I have joined for five months but you never know what the future holds."

The Frenchman remains under contract in Manchester until 2024 and United also have the option to extend that by a further year, so they are in no rush to make a loss on the initial £36m they originally paid Monaco to sign Martial in 2015.
