Anthony Martial: Sevilla president admits January loan 'didn't work'

Sevilla president Jose Castro has confirmed that Anthony Martial will return to Manchester United this summer after his loan deal expired.

The 26-year-old moved to Andalusia in January in a deal which included an option to buy, but he failed to make a real impact during his stay in Spain, chipping in with just one goal and one assist in 12 appearances.

Now, Castro has confirmed that Sevilla have declined to take up the option to sign Martial permanently.

"Anthony Martial will return to Manchester United," he said. "We spent important money on him but it didn’t work.

"Also, he had a lot of injuries. We're not going to buy him on a permanent deal."

Listen now to 90min's Manchester United podcast, The Promised Land, with Scott Saunders & Rob Blanchette. On this week's show they discuss the latest news surrounding the club including a discussion regarding Ten Hag's arrival and his Ronaldo hint.

Martial has two years remaining on his United contract and is expected to be available for transfer once again this summer, with the Red Devils keen to raise money to back incoming manager Erik ten Hag.

Sources have confirmed to 90min that Ten Hag has approved a move for Villarreal centre-back Pau Torres, but both Chelsea and Tottenham have registered their interest in the Spaniard and have the allure of Champions League football to offer him.
