* Bayern Munich's chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge:

"He wanted to join us in 2001 in case his move to Manchester United fell through. We are not doing anything behind Manchester United's back but, first of all, we must find out whether he is really on the market for a fair price."

* The Guardian:

Manchester United and Arsenal may have moved a step closer to acquiring the coveted France international midfielder Franck Ribéry yesterday after his club Marseille declared that he would not be sold to Lyon.

The Marseille president Pape Diouf has been involved in an acrimonious public exchange with his counterpart at the French champions Lyon, Jean-Michel Aulas, for weeks. Aulas had declared on his club's official website that the 23-year-old Ribéry "wants to come to Lyon", but Diouf described that as a "rumour" and one of "many underhand manoeuvres" emanating from Lyon

"It should be known that should Lyon's manoeuvres complicate the relationship between Franck and our supporters to the extent that he leaves, he would go anywhere but Lyon," Diouf was quoted as saying.

* Ronaldo on WC: "We started well and we will play better in the next game

"Angola were a good team who made us fight all the way. Iran are also a good team but we know if we win we are already almost past the group stage.

"I did not score.

"Since, one time, the ball hit the bar and, another, the goalkeeper did very well.

"I did not have any luck.

"Nobody likes to be substituted and I did not like it.

"They are the options of the coach and, most importantly, the team won."

Scolari explained his decision to withdraw Ronaldo in favour of a more solid approach with Costinha.

"Cristiano Ronaldo was taken off because I had to fill the midfield."

* Switzerland's Phillippe Senderos ahead of today's game with France:

"I am reckoning on two strikers in Henry and Saha and know both of them well.

"I don't need to learn much about Henry as I know his game inside and out.

"He plays instinctive football and you never know what he is going to do in the next moment.

"Saha can be better handled. We must not make any easy mistakes in concentration as we would be brutally punished by the French."
