Brian Brobbey's 'joke' about joining Erik ten Hag at Man Utd

Manchester United target Brian Brobbey has previously joked about wanting to join former Ajax manager Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford.

90min understands United are interested in signing the RB Leipzig striker this summer in a move that would see him reunited with Ten Hag, with the new Red Devils boss making contact with the player to gauge his interest.

The coach gave the Ajax academy graduate his first-team debut in 2020, but the 20-year-old left for Leipzig the following year after Sebastien Haller's arrival in Amsterdam. However, Brobbey subsequently returned to the Johan Cruyff Arena on loan for the second half of last season.

It was during his prolific second spell at the club - where he netted seven times in just 11 league games - that Brobbey joked about joining Man Utd when reacting to Ten Hag's appointment at Old Trafford back in April.

"I am very happy for [Ten Hag] and that's a great step for him that he deserves after everything he has done for Ajax," he said.

"I am happy for him, but only if he brings me with him in two years [laughs]."

Brobbey then swiftly added: "No, no, joking."

While his spell in Germany did not go to plan, Ajax are keen on a permanent transfer for their former player - although their current offer falls well short of Leipzig's €25m valuation.

That figure would not be a problem for United, who may have to enter the market for a central striker with Cristiano Ronaldo's future up in the air amid interest from Chelsea.
