BROKEN DREAMS

The MEN reports that scans done on Wayne Rooney's foot show a cluster of breaks rather than one break which will obviously make his recovery period longer than expected. Speaking to Pravda TV yesterday Wayne Rooney spoke for the first time about his injury.

"Obviously I am devastated to break my foot,"

"At this moment in time it is horrible really. But you have to get on with it, be positive and try to get myself fit as soon as possible.

"I know that with the physio team behind me at Manchester United they will be giving me the best possible chance."

He also did the honourable thing of sticking up for his boot sponsors.

"I don't think my football boots had anything to do with the injury. Before we actually wear the boots they get tested out to make sure they're suitable for playing in. The boots have been checked out and the boots are fine.

"It was an impact injury and there was a lot of pressure on my foot. If you watch the video again you can see that's how it happened."

Meanwhile Fergie has said that he would like to Rooney at the World Cup even though he doesn't think he'll be there this time.

"We want Wayne at the World Cup as much as anyone because it would be a great credit to us if he performs properly on the world stage, which I'm sure he would," said Fergie.

"There are people now who think Wayne is a certainty to play in the World Cup. But I think he's far from it."
