Bruno Fernandes Reveals How Cristiano Ronaldo Aided His Move to Manchester United

Manchester United signing Bruno Fernandes has explained the role Cristiano Ronaldo played in his €80m January move, having consulted the former Old Trafford hero about the club. Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer also got in touch with Ronaldo for his opinion on Fernandes.

Fernandes first spoke when the deal was officially completed about a ‘love’ for United that began when he saw Ronaldo playing for the club. United’s newest star was just eight years old when Ronaldo made the move to Manchester and Fernandes said he has been a ‘big fan’ ever since.

Now, in a longer interview with the club’s in-house media, Fernandes has spoken more about Ronaldo and how he specifically contributed towards making this transfer a reality.

“I talked about Manchester United with Cristiano. He just said good things about United. He said he started living his dream here and he started being a really good player here. I think he is happy with my transfer,” Fernandes told ManUtd.com.

“I also talked with Ole and he said he asked Cristiano about me and he said good things about me which is good. Cristiano plays with me in the national team and he knows me, and for me he’s a good person. I want to follow his steps.”

Fernandes has also had contact with another former Sporting and United alumni in Nani, who won four Premier League titles with United during seven years at the club.

“I played with him, he was my captain at Sporting and I learnt some things from him. He sent me a message the other day and said he was very happy for me with my move,” Fernandes said.

United’s new number 18 has been training with his new teammates for the first time on Friday and is expected to make his debut at Old Trafford against Wolves on Saturday evening.

“He’s fit enough to play and he’ll be involved definitely,” Solskjaer said on the matter.

“He’ll be in the squad. Let’s get the training out of the way today. He’s had of course a few hectic days now and even with his little daughter’s three-year birthday yesterday, so I don’t know how much he will be involved, but he’s in the squad.”
