BUILD A CASINO?

This from the Telegraph regarding United's U-turn on a casino

Manchester United revealed yesterday that they have abandoned plans to build a casino on land close to Old Trafford.

"Whilst we maintain strong relationships with both LVSC [US gaming firm, Las Vegas Sands Corp] and Trafford Council, we have decided jointly with LVSC not to progress the proposal at this stage," commercial director Andy Anson said.

The Premiership club refuted suggestions that the abandonment was the result of the government's decision to reduce the number of licences to operate giant Las Vegas-style casinos in England from eight to just one.

Lawmakers are expected to raise the number of licences, having successfully pushed through the legislation around the time of May's general election.

Anson stressed instead that the club have opted not to tie up their resources, allowing them to use the land for alternative future ventures.
