United can return to the top of the Barclays Premier League on Saturday if they register their eighth win of the season at Watford.
Despite having lost just twice this term, Louis van Gaal and his team have come in for criticism for their often laboured style of play.
Former players like Paul Scholes and Gary Neville have criticised the type of football United play under Van Gaal and disgruntled supporters have had their say too, urging the team to attack when they become annoyed at what is perceived to be a negative brand of football.
Smalling thinks that chant will be a thing of the past if United win a trophy come May, however.
"If we win a title or a cup or whatever at the end of the season, I think they will look back and there will be no 'Attack! Attack! Attack!'," the United defender told BT Sport
Smalling is a big fan of Van Gaal, who has started him in every match so far this season, but unfortunately for the defender, his manager seems incapable of remembering his name.
Van Gaal mistakenly called the England international 'Mike' at a press conference in San Jose on the club's pre-season tour and did so again following the 2-0 win over West Brom before the international break.
"Even when we're going to games and getting off the coach, it's all 'Mike, Mike, Mike', and even though it can get annoying, it's one of those which is just going to stick with me and I've got to roll with it," Smalling said.
"It's not Mike in the dressing room but I think every fan knows me as Mike now."
