Daniel James in Line for Man Utd Wage Hike - But the Numbers Don't Actually Add Up

Manchester United will reportedly hand Daniel James a wage rise worth £50,000 per week

though the details around that figure appear to be sketchy given previous reports.

The 22-year-old signed for United from boyhood club Swansea City in the summer for just shy of £20m and has surprisingly found himself enjoying an important role in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's squad.

James got his Red Devils career off to a flying start, scoring three times in his opening four games for the club, including a fine strike against Chelsea on the opening day of the season.

Since then, however, the goals have dried up with the Welshman failing to find the net in his 32 appearances since. His creative influence has also waned recently with the forward not registering an assist in his last eight Premier League games.

Despite this, James has offered United an explosive option in transition and he is set to be rewarded by receiving a wage increase. Or is he?

According to The Sun, he currently earns £35,000 a week, even though they reported in November that it he was actually on £45,000, while in the summer they floated a figure of £67,000.

Anyway...

The Sun are now reporting that James' weekly earnings are set to be increased to £50,000. An 'Old Trafford insider' is said to have told the newspaper: "Daniel’s attitude both on and off the pitch has been first class since he arrived.

"He probably didn’t expect to be involved as much as he has been, but United want to look after him on the wages front.

"He’s an integral part of what the manager is trying to do here, we’re all very impressed."

James could be involved when United travel to Austria to take on LASK in the Europa League Round of 16 on Thursday. The game will take place behind closed doors due to concerns over the coronavirus, which continues to wreak havoc with the footballing schedule.
