David de Gea Given Rest of Season to Fend Off Dean Henderson at Manchester United

Manchester United will give goalkeeper David de Gea the rest of the season to prove that he deserves to retain his place as the club's starting goalkeeper, with young Dean Henderson pushing to take his place.

De Gea was guilty of a high-profile error on Friday as he allowed Steven Bergwijn's shot through his body in the 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur - a mistake that was by no means unique in recent times.

His inconsistent form has prompted calls for De Gea to be dropped from the starting lineup and replaced by Henderson, who has excelled out on loan with Sheffield United and has reportedly made it clear that he will only sign a new contract if he is promised the starting spot.

Given De Gea penned a lucrative four-year deal last September, United are hesitant to give up on him just yet, and The Telegraph note that he will be given the remainder of the campaign to prove himself once more.

Once the season comes to a close, United will make a decision on Henderson's future. 90min understands that the intention is to tie him down to a lucrative new contract which would pay him like a starting goalkeeper, but whether he would be given the nod to start at Old Trafford is unsure.

Dean Henderson has impressed out on loan with Sheffield United

Over the remaining eight games, United officials will be watching both De Gea and Henderson's performances in the hope of determining which one of them would do a better job as the starter at Old Trafford. They are well aware that bringing Henderson back just to sit him on the bench would not go down well.

Sheffield United have asked about bringing him back for a third season on loan, which is seen as more likely than a permanent transfer as United still believe Henderson will one day become their starting goalkeeper.

De Gea has been guilty of several mistakes in the last two seasons

Chelsea have been linked with a £50m move for Henderson amid concerns over Kepa Arrizabalaga's recent form, but United are expected to fend off all suitors.

Henderson did himself no favours in Sheffield United's recent 3-0 loss to Newcastle United, which saw the Blades drop down to seventh in the Premier League table, two points behind fifth-placed Manchester United.
