David de Gea jokes that 'curse' explains Man Utd trophy drought

David de Gea has joked that a 'curse' may explain why Manchester United have been so unsuccessful in recent times.

United have not lifted any silverware since Jose Mourinho led them to Europa League glory in 2017, while De Gea and Phil Jones are the only remaining players who were part of the Red Devils' most recent Premier League title win in 2013.

Asked why he has not won more during his time at Old Trafford during an interview with El Pais, De Gea gave an interesting response.

“I think they have a curse or something there [laughs]. I don’t know, I really don’t know,” he said.

“They always ask me and we talk about it among colleagues and we say: ‘I don’t know what’s going on’. We should have fought for more trophies, more big things, but I don’t know why the team doesn’t go this way, it doesn’t go…”

United's trophy drought is unlikely to end this season too. Their only remaining chance of success is in the Champions League, as they have already been eliminated from both domestic cup competitions and are 21 points adrift in the Premier League title race.

Limping through the group stages set up a last-16 tie with struggling Atletico Madrid, and interim boss Ralf Rangnick will be desperate for his side to start strongly in the first leg on 23 February.

Asked about his relationship with Rangnick, De Gea said: “He wants us to be intense, to always try to press, to be very active.

“But that’s what we try: to be intense and try to recover the ball as high as possible, try to do damage. We know we have to defend better and we try to do that, but it’s hard for us.”
