David de Gea Makes Anonymous Donation to Aid Spanish Coronavirus Battle

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has anonymously donated €300,000 to help Spain in their battle with the coronavirus outbreak, but it's not so anonymous anymore.

At the time of writing, Spain's death toll from the pandemic is the second-highest in the entire world, behind only the United States.

As noted by the Evening StandardDe Gea pledged the money anonymously, only for Community of Madrid president Isabel Díaz Ayuso to spill the beans on Twitter soon after.

"Thank you De Gea," she said. "The great help you have provided to the Community of Madrid will be key to fighting COVID-19. Eternally grateful, proud of you.”

Madrid has been one of the worst hit regions in Spain, with nearly half of the country's number of coronavirus cases coming in the capital city. Real Madrid have already pledged to use the Santiago Bernabéu to store medical equipment and donations, and De Gea has now offered help of his own.

The goalkeeper is not the only Spaniard to donate. Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola pledged €1m to hospitals in Catalonia which help to manufacture and distribute equipment to help deal with the coronavirus outbreak.

United have also teamed up with cross-town rivals City to donate £100,000 to food banks in the Greater Manchester area to ensure those in need can still be fed, while Marcus Rashford is working closely with a campaign to ensure children in need of free school meals are still fed during the lockdown.

“We are proud of the role our supporters play in helping local food banks and recognise the increased strain likely to be placed on these charities by the impact of coronavirus," United said in a statement on their official website.

"At a time of challenge for our community, we are pleased to come together with our fans to help vulnerable members of society in a City United.”
