Dean Henderson Has No Interest in Returning to Man Utd Unless He Is Made First Choice

Dean Henderson has no interest in returning to Manchester United in the summer - unless he is made the club's number one goalkeeper.

The 22-year-old is currently on loan at Sheffield United and his fine performances have played a significant role in propelling his side to sixth place in the Premier League.

It is his second successive season at Bramall Lane, having previously been part of the Blades team that won promotion from the Championship last term.

Henderson has registered nine clean sheets this campaign, the joint highest in the division along with Nick Pope and Alisson. He also averages a save percentage of 76.2%, the second best in the league and considerably higher than current Red Devils goalkeeper David de Gea (67.8%).

Despite this, it is unlikely that the Englishman will unseat De Gea when he returns to Old Trafford in the summer. This could create a sticky situation for United as the Manchester Evening News reports that Henderson has no intention of staying at the club next season if he is not first choice between the sticks.

The goalkeeper is understood to be open to a loan move with Chris Wilder confirming that he would love the Blades' star man to stick around for another year.

"If the opportunity comes about that we could get him back on loan next season we’d be all over that," Wilder stated.

The 52-year-old did however rule out a permanent deal for Henderson. "It won’t be on a permanent basis, definitely not," he added. "His future is at Manchester United, no doubt. If the opportunity came about that figure would be huge."

Henderson is most likely to be integrated into the Red Devils' first team the season after next. Sergio Romero's contract expires in June 2021 and, unless the Argentine signs an unlikely extension, United will be a keeper short for the 2021/22 campaign.
