DESIGNER BECKS

He's worn a sarong; he's written two autobiographies by the age of 27; he's
the face that's launched a slew of improbable haircut trends and even more
improbable children's names; he's even been known to kick a football or two
in his time.

But yesterday David Beckham added yet another achievement to his CV,
when he became a fashion designer.

High street retailers Marks and Spencer have recruited the Manchester United
captain, who is known more for his more outré fashion tastes than his
mainstream design talents, to create a line of sporty clothes for boys aged six
to 12.

The range, named DB07 in reference to Beckham's football number, will be
available in outlets from tomorrow.

The carefully stage managed launch in Manchester city centre yesterday was
a testament to Marks and Spencer's ' hopes that their latest celebrity
collaboration will revive their ailing fortunes.

The clothes, which show more of an influence from Alex Ferguson than from
Beckham's wife, Victoria, are casual and loose. Chunky sweatshirts, baggy
jeans and loose t-shirts in red, blue and grey were the order of the day. In a
new twist on logomania, all the clothes are heavily labelled with Beckham's
name and number.

However there's no mention of a ME69 binocular range.
