Edinson Cavani urges Man Utd fans to 'have faith' ahead of Manchester derby

Edinson Cavani wants Man Utd fans to "have faith" in the team as they prepare to take on Man City in the Manchester derby.

The Premier League champions make the short journey to Old Trafford less than a fortnight after Liverpool won 5-0 away at United.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men have managed to halt the slide somewhat in their two games following that humiliation, beating Tottenham 3-0 and salvaging a 2-2 draw with Atalanta in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

Cavani, who scored in the win at Spurs and helped turn the tide in United's favour in Bergamo, sent a message to the fans in Saturday's United Review (via manutd.com).

“Have faith in their team and have faith in the players who, without a doubt, will be trying hard to perform well and to keep growing and improving so that the faith that they’ve shown us, we might be able to, as they say, pay it back with good results, hard work and by winning stuff," Cavani said.

"So I’d just like to send best wishes to all the United fans and it really is a pleasure for me to be here at their club.”

The Uruguay international has played in some of the biggest games in world football, and said that while Man Utd supporters stop him in the street to stress the importance of the derby, he knows how much it means to everyone at the club.

“I understand perfectly well what these games mean, and I feel just how significant a derby is for a club and its fanbase,” Cavani said.

He added: “[In Manchester], last season you’d see the odd fan who’d let you know that the derby game was coming up.

“But they’ve also spoken to me about how much the Liverpool game means to them too. I think it’s also one of those games that’s talked about an awful lot and where you can feel it yourself, just exactly what it means. That derby shares that same feeling, a special game that the fans really want to win.”
