Erik ten Hag on how Harry Maguire can silence Man Utd boo boys

Erik ten Hag has revealed his belief that the boos for Manchester United captain Harry Maguire will subside if he continues to perform as he has been in pre-season.

Maguire was subjected to jeers during his side's recent pre-season victory over Crystal Palace in Melbourne, though the negative reception eventually dried up thanks to the England international's accomplished defensive display.

It is not the first time that the 29-year-old has been booed during his career. Maguire also received a frosty reaction while on international duty in the summer.

However, Ten Hag has revealed that he expects the boos to die down if his players perform well this season.

“We heard, but you see, if you perform then it slows down, I think the team and Harry Maguire they impressed by the way they play," he said.

Ten Hag was also asked why he thought there was so much negativity surrounding Maguire, but he insisted that was not his focus.

"I don’t think it’s a matter of finding out if I can understand it, it’s how can we change it. The team and Harry himself by performing, that’s what we’re working on, that’s the only focus," he said.

The Dutchman was speaking ahead of his side's pre-season friendly against Aston Villa on Saturday. Games against Atletico Madrid and Rayo Vallecano follow before United's Premier League campaign kicks off against Brighton on Sunday 7 August.
