Erik ten Hag press conference: Man City defeat; Ronaldo happiness; Casemiro vs McTominay

Erik ten Hag spoke to the press ahead of Manchester United's Europa League match against Omonia Nicosia.

Ten Hag's suffered a humiliating 6-3 defeat against local rivals Manchester City at the weekend and need to bounce back if they want to make it out of their Europa League group without too much trouble. They currently sit third having lost to Real Sociedad last time out.

Here's what the manager said in the build-up to the game.

Manchester derby

How big a concern is the defeat?

"It was a difficult day. We will analyse, it was a reality check, we need to learn from it and carry on.

"We can get a lot of confidence from beating Arsenal and Liverpool, but now we get a reality check with Man City. So thank you for the lesson, Pep [Guardiola] and City. We have to understand, we have to do things much better."

Cristiano Ronaldo

Is he unhappy after not playing against Man City?

"I can't see that relation. When we're 4-0 down or 6-1 down, I didn't bring him on out of respect. That has no connection with his future at the club.

"I don't see he is unhappy, he is training well and enjoying being here.

"He's not happy that he didn't play Sunday, don't get me wrong, but the question was about his mood in training, where he's happy. Of course, he wants to play and he's p*ssed off when he's not playing.

"Cristiano is really competitive, he is not happy when he is not playing, but I have to repeat, maybe you didn't hear, he is training well, he is in a good mood, he is motivated and he gives his best and that is what we expect."

Casemiro

Why didn't he play in the derby?

"It had nothing to do with Casemiro, it had all to do with Scott [McTominay]. When he wasn't in the team at Brentford, we lost. Casemiro will have an important role, we know his background, the titles he's won, you see every day in training."

Manchester United team news

On Raphael Varane, Harry Maguire, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Donny van de Beek's injuries

"Not available for tomorrow. In the case of Raphael, I have good hope [he will be back soon], Harry will take a little bit longer and the other two I cannot give [an update]."

Will he play his first-choice starting XI?

"We will play tomorrow our best team, we have to construct a team because we want a competitive culture."
