If the White Hart Lane faithful harboured any ill-feeling towards Dimitar Berbatov after he swapped north London for Manchester in 2008, then that hatred may well have trebled in recent days.
The former striker - who lifted two Premier League titles during his four-year stint at Old Trafford - has poured fuel onto the fire surrounding a similar move for current Tottenham captain Harry Kane, much to the dismay of the Spurs faithful.
The England striker has been linked with a move to Man Utd in recent transfer windows, and as the Lilywhites continue to regress under new boss José Mourinho, Premier League and European glory feels a long way off for Kane and co.
Speaking to the Daily Mail, Berbatov discussed the 'similarities' he sees in Kane's situation to that of his own 12 years ago, admitting that the England forward may be wondering if he's 'on the right path' towards winning trophies with Tottenham.
“I see a lot of similarities in the situation I went through and what is happening with Kane,” the Bulgarian said.
“I feel that it’s also a similar time in his career that I was at, you start to think if you’re on the right path and you think about winning things.
“There is a strong connection between Spurs and Manchester United, Teddy Sheringham was at Tottenham then went to Old Trafford, I was a Spurs striker and went to United and now Kane, who’s also a striker, is being linked with a move there.”
And although Berbatov's words will not have calmed Spurs supporters' nerves, he did not create this media storm all by himself. Kane cast huge doubts over his future in north London last month, admitting on Instagram that he's 'not someone to stay there for the sake of it.'
“I love Spurs, I’d always love Spurs, but it’s one of them things, I’ve always said if I don’t feel progression in the team or it’s going the right direction then I’m not someone to just stay there for the sake of it.
“I’m an ambitious player, I want to improve, I want to get better. I want to become one of the top top players.
“It all depends what happens with the team and how we progress as a team.”
Kane is the shining light and a living legend in this struggling team, but is his time as a Spurs hero set to come to a bitter end?
