For the last four World Cup squads Ferdinand has been part of the set up in the England camp, but Hodgson has decided that he would rather take John Terry to next month's European Championship finals.
Hodgson claimed the Manchester United defender was not dropped because of the race row that has engulfed Terry and Ferdinand's brother Anton. He did however feel that the defender could no longer be considered good enough to cut the grade at international level any longer.
A disappointed Ferdinand wrote on Twitter: "Absolutely loved playing for England....to say I'm gutted is an understatement of the highest order..."
