Frenkie de Jong: Manchester United confident of reaching agreement with Barcelona

90min understands that Manchester United are confident of securing an agreement with Barcelona for midfielder Frenkie de Jong after talks between the two clubs began.

United have spent much of the last week in talks with De Jong's representatives and a broad agreement over personal terms has been reached after the player confirmed he was happy to move to Old Trafford.

Erik Ten Hag has personally spoken to De Jong and has convinced his former Ajax star to come and work with him again. This personal intervention from the United boss is believed to have played a major part in the transfer progressing.

Once United secured an understanding with De Jong, they moved onto direct communications with Barcelona and the two clubs are locked in talks.

Barça coach Xavi has also spoken to De Jong and told him he would be happy for him to stay, but the club's financial situation means he is one of the players they are willing to take offers for.

The Catalan giants have made it clear to United that they would need to pay around €75m plus extras worth around €10m to get the Dutch star, although the Red Devils' current offer is €70m including add-ons.

90min has been told by sources from both clubs that there is belief a deal will be in place ready for De Jong to have his medical at the end of the June international window.

Having missed out on Darwin Nunez to rivals Liverpool, United are anxious to land De Jong for new manager Ten Hag, who made it clear even before his appointment that the Barça man was his number one transfer target.
