Gary Neville Claims Ed Woodward & Man Utd Hierarchy Deserve to Be Sacked Over Club's Plight

Manchester United legend Gary Neville has stated that Ed Woodward and other members of the club’s senior management team deserve to be sacked for building the current squad that has proven incapable of challenging for major honours on the second highest wage bill in the world.

United have spent enormous amounts on transfers fees and wages in recent years, but trailing Liverpool by 30 points in the Premier League following Sunday’s defeat at Anfield shows just how little the club has achieved since Sir Alex Ferguson retired.

Mediocrity has been rewarded with new lucrative contracts and the club has often targeted the wrong players in the transfer market.

Despite major criticism of former managers David Moyes, Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho, as well as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer taking a lot of flak for the current season, it has become increasingly accepted by fans and media alike that the blame lies higher up.

In his latest Sky Sports podcast, Neville has questioned why a hierarchy that is headed by executive vice-chairman Woodward is still there, despite failure and the ‘mess’ it has overseen.

“I’m struggling to understand why the ownership have persisted in trusting that management team to oversee the building of a Premier League title winning team since Sir Alex left,” Neville said.

“I saw a statistic that United have the second-highest wage bill in the world - and that’s the squad they’ve got. It’s unforgivable, it really is. I can’t believe the investment that’s been put into the squad in the last five, six, seven years and you end up with that out on the pitch.

“If you don’t lose your job for essentially overseeing that investment, that wage bill, and putting that team out on the pitch then I have to say something is really wrong.”

Neville explained that there is ‘real talent’ in United’s executive ranks, but explained that they have failed for several years to put the ‘best in class football operators into that club’.

“They’re not doing it and it’s a mess,” he said.
