Graham Potter says Brighton weren't surprised by Erik ten Hag's team selection

Brighton manager Graham Potter says his side were not spooked by the surprise decision from Erik ten Hag to deploy Christian Eriksen as a false nine.

The Dutchman left Cristiano Ronaldo on the bench for the visit of the Seagulls, opting instead for a fluid attacking quartet with Eriksen as the most advanced player.

But Potter says his side were prepared for any such scenario as Brighton tasted victory at Old Trafford for the first time in their history.

"It was not overly surprising from our perspective," said the Seagulls boss. "They had a few options."

Brighton raced out to a 2-0 lead when Pascal Gross netted a first half brace, with Leandro Trossard also going close for the away side.

United were handed a lifeline when Alexis Mac Allister, aided by goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, bundled the ball over his own goalline, but ten Hag's side were unable to find an equaliser.

Potter insists his side were deserved winners despite United's pressure in the second half.

He added: "It was a great performance and a deserved win over the course of the game.

"It was a fantastic effort from the players and a great way to start. We had an idea how to attack and, when we could, press and put them under pressure.

"We were positive and brave in what we tried to do. The boys gave everything.

"It's a difficult place to come with the quality that Man Utd have. The crowd get behind them very quickly. Our performance in the first half was really strong."
