Harry Maguire Set For 'Sustained' Spell Out After Suffering Torn Hip Muscle

Harry Maguire is set to be sidelined for longer than initially anticipated after the Manchester United defender suffered a torn hip muscle during the club's recent 0-0 FA Cup draw with Wolves.

The England international pulled up in the first half of United’s goalless draw in the third round, causing him to miss the club's dismal 3-1 Carabao Cup first leg defeat to Manchester City on Tuesday evening.

Despite looking in considerable discomfort at Molineux, Maguire did play the full 90 minutes of the fixture. However, subsequent scans have shown that the defender has suffered a muscle tear at the top of his hip.

While it was expected that Maguire would miss United's upcoming Premier League clash with Norwich on Saturday, the newest developments would indicate an even lengthier layoff. According to the Telegraph, Maguire's injury will result in a 'sustained' spell on the sidelines which, without giving a specific date, would suggest that he may be absent beyond that clash.

The injuries are already mounting up for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who is without midfield duo Scott McTominay and Paul Pogba - the pair out until late February at the earliest and the beginning of February, respectively.

While midfield has been rocked with setbacks, the defence is equally unequipped. Diogo Dalot, has been troubled with a hip problem of his own since pre-season and fellow defender Axel Tuanzebe has also struggled with a similar problem throughout the season.

In Maguire's absence, Solskjaer may turn to Phil Jones. However, the Englishman failed to impress against City on Tuesday and the Norwegian manager may have to look elsewhere for cover. Marcos Rojo is a player who could come in to fill the defensive void but, as the Telegraph mention, he is someone that could be shipped out of the club this transfer window.

Eric Bailly, meanwhile, has only recently returned to full training after a six month spell out following knee surgery and is likely to be thrust into the first team so soon.

After facing the Canaries, United will host Wolves in their FA Cup replay - before traveling to Anfield to take on Liverpool in a monumental clash that Maguire will be racing to be fit for.
