I FEEL GOOD

Fergie is happy to be in a semi final

'I'm pleased with the result, it was a very difficult game and both teams put a lot on it,'

'The first goal was crucial - whoever scored that was going to win. I thought we had more speed to our game in the first half, and Chelsea came more into second half, but we got the goal that mattered.

'The players wanted to win tonight. They defended very well and the two centre-backs were marvellous.'

'Once you are in a semi-final you have to go for it,'' he said.

"This is still a great tournament to give younger players a chance but we knew Chelsea would play a strong side and it would have been difficult to pitch inexperienced players into that kind of battle.

"It was an even game but I always felt the first goal would decide it.''

"Maybe the situation will surprise some people bearing in mind the way we have approached the tournament in the past,'' admitted Ferguson.

"But once you get by those first two rounds and then find yourself in a home quarter-final against Chelsea there is a great incentive. We are in the last four now so we have to go for it.''

And on Diego

"I felt one goal would settle it and fortunately Diego got it for us. The players and fans love him because he keeps trying and he is beginning to look like a tremendous buy now.

"He is only 23 and has plenty of goals left in him yet.''

'The little lad puts a lot into his game and I'm pleased for him,'

"It was a great finish. He puts a lot into his football and I think he deserved his goal."

"The players and supporters love Diego because he keeps trying,''

"He was only a young lad when he came over from South America and it takes time.

"He was coming on as sub a lot and not getting many starts but he has settled in now. It was a great finish and he deserved his success.''

Fergie would have liked to have fielded a changed side.

"Both Mikael and Wes were outstanding,'' admitted the United chief. ``It was a fantastic performance by both of them.

"There is no doubt that the two of them have been a revelation but I don't see it as a problem - we are delighted it has happened.

"We need a strong squad going into the second half of the season and they will both be very valuable to us.''

"It was a dilemma because Ruud and Ole have been in such great form,'' he said.

"I knew Chelsea would play their strongest side and it would have been difficult to pitch our young players into that kind of battle.

Diego on goals and semi finals

"It was a tight angle, but I managed to put it on target. It was a good feeling."

'It's nice we are now in the semi and it's good for us. There are only two games left and we have to see who we play against in the semis.'

Man of the match Silvestre is pleased with the defence.

'It was a really close game, Chelsea played good football, so we are delighted. It is good for the confidence of the back four.'

Monkey of the match Gianfranco Zola

'We are very disappointed because we didn't deserve to lose,' he said.

'They scored at the moment when we were on top of them, but we don't come out of this game with dishonour, we played a fantastic game and after this game we can be sure that we will be on top for the rest of the season.

'We had two great chances in the first half.
