Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville Make Surprising Choices for Liverpool vs Man Utd Combined XI

With top-of-the-table Liverpool set to take on Manchester United on Sunday, Sky Sports pundits Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher have given their combined XI's for the game. Whilst Neville went somewhat safe with his picks, Carragher's lineup includes a surprising addition.

Liverpool and Manchester United are the two most decorated clubs in English football. The Red Devils have won the most league titles in England, with 20 to their name, whilst Liverpool sit just below them with 18. This rich history means that whenever these two sides clash, it's always a must-watch match.

Ahead of the game, Neville and Carragher picked their respective combined XI's - a team which includes the best players from each club. Neville was up first, and here is the team he opted for, as reported by Sky Sports.

Gary Neville's Combined XI:

De Gea (GK), Alexander-Arnold (RB), Van Dijk (CB), Bailly (CB), Robertson (LB), Wijnaldum (CM), Pogba (CM), Keita (CM), Salah (RW), Firmino (ST), Martial (LW)

Neville's team seems well balanced given the form of the two clubs this season. He has opted to name just four Manchester United players in the lineup, which must have been painful as an ex-Red Devils player himself.

However, there may be some raised eyebrows amongst Liverpool fans when they see that Paul Pogba has been included in the lineup, given his poor form this season.

On this decision, Neville explained: "Perhaps I was clutching at straws, but I looked at it as an opportunity to put a United player in there, as I think Pogba is United's best central midfield player and the most talented at the two clubs."

However, Carragher seems to have outdone Neville with the midfielder he has chosen to include. Here is the team that the former Liverpool man opted for:

De Gea (GK), Alexander-Arnold (RB), Lovren (CB), Van Dijk (CB), Robertson (LB), Keita (CM), Matic (CM), Milner (CM), Salah (RW), Firmino (ST), Mané (LW)

Carragher has selected just two Manchester United players in his combined XI. Bar David De Gea, the Sky Sports pundit chose a full Liverpool defence which isn't overly surprising given the fact that the Reds have conceded just six goals this season.

The inclusion of Nemanja Matic comes as a surprise given the Serbian's volatile form so far this season. He explained: "I've put Nemanja Matic in because he's the classic holding midfielder; he's been there, done it and won titles. He's probably the best holding midfield player in both squads.

"I've gone for James Milner alongside him. I don't think Jurgen Klopp would swap Milner for Pogba if he could. He's not going to press."

Before Liverpool take on Manchester United, they face a crucial fixture against Napoli in the Champions League. The Reds must win either 1-0, or by a two goal margin should Napoli score, or they will crash out of the Champions League. Manchester United, meanwhile, have a stress-free game against Valencia having secured qualification to the last 16 already.
