Leeds manager Jesse Marsch has heaped praise on Ralf Rangnick for revolutionising the way he looked at football earlier in his managerial journey.
Marsch worked as Rangnick's assistant at RB Leipzig in the 2018/19 season, spending one year under the German before making the switch to take charge of another Red Bull entity in Salzburg.
His own spell in the Leipzig dugout followed and Marsch is now at Leeds, with current Manchester United interim chief Rangnick sending his well wishes ahead of the move.
Speaking to The Athletic, Marsch reflected on just how influential Rangnick was to developing his coaching style.
“The first thing I learned was how specific and detailed the Germans are in the way they think and talk about football,” Marsch said. “They’re lasered-in on the smallest of details. It’s a quality of Germans, I think. They’re very detail orientated and specific.
“I thought I was detail orientated about football until I met Rangnick. Then I knew I wasn’t.
“This was a guy who worked through a system, a vocabulary and methodology that I never even thought was possible. I called it an explosion in my head because it taught me a new way of thinking. From there, I was learning more and more and detailing things more and more. It was an important moment for me.”
Rangnick has been credited as an influence for a number of the game's top managers, including Liverpool's Jurgen Klopp, Chelsea's Thomas Tuchel and Bayern Munich's Julian Nagelsmann, the latter of whom preceded Marsch at Leipzig.
