KIDDO, HUGHESIE AND KEANO

Carlos to the Screws:

"Alex has been working hard for a long time to get Mark on board.

"He tried to get him in November but it was difficult because Hughes was asking too much money.

"United brought in Ricky Sbragia from Sunderland in the end and he is working with the youngsters.

"Hughes wasn't making it easy at the time to take him to Manchester but Sir Alex can't do everything.

"Sharing responsibilities is key for the smooth running of that club."

But Welsh Football Association president Des Shanklin told the same paper: "We have to recognise going into management with United would be Mark's ultimate dream.

"Manchester United are the biggest club in the world and we would never stand in Mark's way if he wanted to leave.

"But I'm 100% confident that he will see out his contract with us.

"The fans would be mortified if he walked out on us now.

"It is not surprising United are interested in Mark, given his track record over the past two years. My opinion is that Mark is very happy with his arrangement with us.

"I spoke with him at a three-hour meeting on Friday and he's given no indication of a possible move to United."

Paddy Crerand on MUTV:

'There's going to be great discussion now over who will get the job next to Sir Alex Ferguson.

'Will he be brave enough to bring Brian Kidd back? Could that happen? I'm sure it would be a popular choice, but maybe there have been too many waters muddied for that to happen, I don't know what went on.'

'I thought Brian was absolutely magnificent here, and I'm sure the players did too.

'He went, and everyone thought the club was going to fall apart. But it didn't, as the manager was still there. McClaren left, now Carlos.

'It's when the manager leaves that you've got a problem.'

And McClaren back Keano in The Sunday Mirror:

"Roy is an obvious candidate to move into coaching - and, as everyone knows, he has a very close relationship with Sir Alex.

"I'm not sure whether it will happen right now, with Carlos joining Madrid, because Roy is still a massive influence for the manager out on the pitch. But by taking his coaching badge Roy's made it clear that one day he would like to step into a coaching role - and United are very much his club.

"Sir Alex would have encouraged him to get some coaching qualifications under his belt. He is a manager who is always open to new ideas and methods.

"His belief is that if you stop learning in this game then you start going backwards.

"The thing about Manchester United is that it is a high-profile job that involves working with some of the best players in the world.

"In some ways it is a dream job for a coach to have, but it is very important that you have the right kind of qualifications to do the job.

"Because of that, whenever a club is looking for a new manager or coach, then a natural place to look is towards the man working alongside Sir Alex at United.

'It's not about going there and starting in the first team straight away. The point of going there is to learn and improve.

'I am not going there to take this or that player's place. I am not thinking that way. But given time I think I will be a first-team starter.'
