Louis van Gaal to speak with Ryan Giggs about Swansea link

Former Wales captain Giggs has been linked to a return to his homeland following Garry Monk's departure from the Liberty Stadium on Wednesday.

"First I have to speak to Ryan Giggs by himself if it's true," Van Gaal said at his press conference before United's Barclays Premier League trip to Bournemouth.

"And [in that case], he's coming to me

I never read papers and I think that it's the truth

I'm sorry.

"I cannot speak about 'if'

The 'if' situations."

Giggs was linked with Swansea as club chairman Huw Jenkins continued his search for a successor to Monk, who paid the price for a dismal run of form in the past three months.

And Harry Redknapp, the former West Ham, Portsmouth and Tottenham manager, wrote on his Twitter account: "Hearing talk of Giggsy for the Swansea job

"It'd be a big step up, not easy to manage a Prem club

Garry Monk will have learnt an awful lot."

Former United manager David Moyes had earlier ruled himself out of the running for the Swansea job.

Moyes had figured heavily in the betting following Monk's departure, but he said it was not the position for him as he seeks to get back into management after being sacked by Spanish top-flight club Real Sociedad in November.

"I'm not interested in the (Swansea) job," Moyes told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast on talkSport.

" I've let that be known earlier in the week that it wasn't for me."

Monk guided Swansea to a best eighth-placed finish in the Premier League last season but lost his job as the Welsh club won only once in 11 games to leave themselves one point above the relegation zone

Jenkins said in a statement on Wednesday that the club hoped to appoint a new manager as soon as possible following the end of Monk's 22-month reign.

It is understood Swansea were keen on bringing their former manager Brendan Rodgers back to the Liberty Stadium but the Northern Irishman felt it was not the right move for him following his exit from Liverpool in October.

Swansea are in the process of drawing up a short-list of candidates and former Sunderland manager Gus Poyet, who is currently at Greek club AEK Athens, is expected to be among the names discussed.

The Uruguayan was close to getting the job when Rodgers was appointed in 2010 and is understood to be out of contract at the end of the season, so compensation would not be a huge issue.

Ajax assistant Dennis Bergkamp, Chelsea's former Champions League-winning boss Roberto Di Matteo and Rangers manager Mark Warburton are others who have been heavily linked with the Swansea vacancy.
