Louis van Gaal warns Erik ten Hag off joining Man Utd

Netherlands boss Louis van Gaal has warned Erik ten Hag that he should not join Manchester United because they are 'not a football club'.

United have interviewed Ten Hag on their search for a new manager and are considering handing him the same spot in the Old Trafford dugout that Van Gaal called his own between 2014 and 2016.

Van Gaal's time at United is not remembered particularly fondly by fans, despite his success in the 2015/16 FA Cup final - his final game before he was abruptly sacked and replaced by Jose Mourinho.

Now at the helm of the Dutch national team, Van Gaal claimed that the taking the United job would not be in Ten Hag's best interests.

"Erik ten Hag is a great coach and that is always good for Manchester United," he told a press conference. "But Manchester United are a commercial club, so it's a difficult choice for a coach. He should go to a football club instead."

Van Gaal continued: "I'm not going to tell him what to do. He can call me himself. Sometimes we talk to each other. But he must choose a football club and not a commercial club."

Ten Hag is one of United's top targets to assume control of the first team in the summer alongside Mauricio Pochettino, who is expected to leave Paris Saint-Germain at the end of the season after an underwhelming season which will almost certainly still yield the Ligue 1 title.
