Luke Shaw 'confident' he will be fit for Man Utd's Premier League opener

Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw has been described as ‘confident’ he will be fit in time to play in the club’s Premier League opener against Leeds at Old Trafford on 14 August.

Shaw became one of United’s best players last season but played with wrist strapping at Euro 2020 as a result of a pre-tournament ligament injury. He is also thought to have played with broken ribs during the knockout stages and there have been concerns over his fitness.

Shaw is yet to resume training after playing for England in the Euro 2020 final on 11 July and is expected to report for duty along with his international colleagues next week.

The Manchester Evening News reports that United staff are yet to assess the injuries the 26-year-old is carrying. However, Shaw himself is said to be ‘confident’ he will be able to start when Leeds visit Old Trafford just under two and a half weeks from now.

Shaw and his England colleagues – including Harry Maguire and new signing Jadon Sancho, will have two weeks to prepare themselves to face Leeds. United have a friendly against Preston on Saturday they won’t be involved in, before a training camp in Scotland next week.

There will be a final friendly of the summer against Everton at Old Trafford on 7 August, one week before the start of the season, which will be a vital opportunity for Shaw, Maguire and Sancho to build match sharpness. A decision is still yet to be made on Marcus Rashford’s shoulder surgery.

The importance of Shaw’s fitness in time for the start of the season increased this week after manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirmed the ankle injury suffered by Alex Telles in pre-season training is worse than first feared and will rule him out until September.

That means Telles will not be available for United’s opening three games of the season against Leeds, Southampton and Wolves, with Brandon Williams the only other recognised left-back.
