Luke Shaw played Euro 2020 knockout stages with broken ribs

Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw chose to play through the pain in the final three matches of Euro 2020, despite suffering broken ribs in the round-of-16 victory over Germany.

Shaw, who arrived at the tournament carrying a wrist injury, was one of the stars of the show in the 2-0 win over Germany, setting up Raheem Sterling for the opening goal and playing a major role in the second.

It was impressive enough already, but according to The Telegraph, he was actually nursing broken ribs during that game, which makes his performance even more ridiculous.

If that's not enough for you, Shaw then went on to produce his best performance of the summer in the 4-0 win over Ukraine just a few days later and then played every minute of both the semi-final and the final - opening the scoring in the latter.

Playing through the pain might not make him too popular with those in charge at United as he will likely need some treatment on the injury, but that has been delayed even further by Shaw's post-tournament holiday.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is keen for Shaw to return to Carrington as soon as possible to undergo scans on the injury to assess just how much football he will miss.

His involvement in pre-season has already been limited because of England's deep run in the Euros, and there's a good chance he may not feature at all because of this injury, meaning his chances of featuring in the season-opener against Leeds on 14 August are slim to none.

Solskjaer is already expected to be without forward Marcus Rashford, who is considering undergoing shoulder surgery which could force him to miss around three months of action, and losing Shaw would leave the boss without both his preferred left-back and left winger.

United do still have Brazilian Alex Telles, who is likely to fill in for Shaw until the 26-year-old is ready to return.
