Man arrested on suspicion of rape and assault; Man Utd suspend Mason Greenwood over woman's allegati

Greater Manchester Police have confirmed that a man in his 20s has been arrested on suspicion of rape and assault against a woman.

A statement confirmed on Sunday afternoon that the force had been made aware of "online social media images and videos posted by a woman reporting incidents of physical violence."

The man is now in police custody for questions and enquiries are ongoing, Greater Manchester Police added.

The allegations were earlier connected to Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood, who has subsequently been suspended from all first team duties by the club.

“We are aware of images and allegations circulating on social media," a club spokesperson initially said on Sunday morning, adding: "We will not make any further comment until the facts have been established. Manchester United does not condone violence of any kind."

Later on in the day, United confirmed that "Mason Greenwood will not return to training or play matches until further notice."

The allegations were posted on social media platform Instagram and included pictures, video and an audio note that claimed to be a conversation held between the woman and Greenwood. They have since been removed.

Nike, who sponsor Greenwood, issues a response to the allegations, telling The Athletic: “We are deeply concerned by the disturbing allegations and will continue to closely monitor the situation.”

Greenwood made his first team debut for United in 2019 and has since made 129 appearances for the club, scoring 35 times. He is contracted to the club until 2025.
