Man Utd Chasing Impressive WSL Record as Action Prepares to Resume After Winter Break

Manchester United Women are on course to kick off 2020 in record breaking fashion as they seek to become the first newly promoted team in Women’s Super League history to win five consecutive home games when they host Bristol City at Leigh Sports Village on Sunday.

Despite the surprise setback of an away defeat against West Ham at the start of December, United have taken to the WSL very well since storming the second tier Championship last season and have won each of their last four top flight home matches since September.

During that run, Casey Stoney’s side have comfortably beaten Liverpool, Reading, Brighton and Everton. The only goal conceded came against the latter in the final game before the winter break, but United quickly overturned the early deficit to win 3-1.

No one has ever won five successive home games in their first season as a promoted WSL club.

Given their strong performances so far and the impressive level of talent in the squad, a strong willed United would have fancied their chances of getting that record-breaking fifth win against whoever they play. But facing bottom club Bristol City makes it even more likely.

Bristol are still yet to win a WSL game this season and sunk to the bottom of the table on goal difference after the last round of fixtures when they were leapfrogged by also winless Liverpool.

The Robins’ winless run actually stretches back to March last season and currently stands at 12 league games. What’s more, they have the leakiest defence in the WSL by some distance in 2019/20, having conceded 30 goals in nine games – Arsenal recently smashed 11 past them.

Brighton have the next worst defence in the league, conceding 22, and United put four past the Seagulls when they visited Leigh Sports Village at the end of November. That was a day that saw winger Leah Galton shine with two goals and an assist.

United have scored more WSL goals (16) this season than anyone outside the ‘Big Three’. Of those 16, as many as 13 have been scored from open play, in addition to three penalties converted by captain Katie Zelem. Perhaps rather bizarrely, United are actually the only WSL team not yet to score from a free-kick situation or corner so far this season.
