Man Utd could face UEFA sanctions after fans throw bottles at Diego Simeone

Manchester United are expected to be punished by UEFA after a section of fans threw objects at Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone after Tuesday's 1-0 defeat.

Simeone knocked United out of the Champions League and went sprinting straight down the tunnel, narrowly avoiding a barrage of bottles, cups and a whole host of other objects in the process.

Referee Slavko Vincic was also targeted by the same projectiles as he left the field, and he will now reflect on the incidents involving both himself and Simeone in his post-match report to UEFA.

The Times note that the European governing body were expecting that report on Wednesday and will soon decide whether or not to charge United.

There is a section of the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations which specifically covers the throwing of objects from the crowd, with Tottenham recently hit with a fine after fans were seen throwing projectiles back in December.

After the match, Simeone claimed to have missed the objects thrown from the stands.

“When I came off the pitch, I ran because I was happy,” he said. “And I like to enjoy it in the dressing room, so I don’t know what happened... all I was thinking about was getting into the changing room, and I was really happy.”

As for Vincic, his performance during the game attracted plenty of criticism from fans and United interim boss Ralf Rangnick did not hold back with a scathing review of the Slovenian official.

“It was hard in the second half and always interrupted,” he said. “There was always somebody lying on the floor. I would also say some curious refereeing decisions.

“I wouldn’t say they were decisive but at least he fell too often for those time-wasting antics and four minutes at the end added on was a joke for me. I don’t know if we were naive against a team like Atletico who are the champions of that style of football, it’s not easy. You have to break through that wall somehow. We don’t have the most physical of teams to break through walls. You need physicality.”
