Man Utd ready to open talks with David de Gea over future

Manchester United are ready to sit down with David de Gea to discuss his long-term future at the club, 90min understands.

The 31-year-old has 18 months left on his Old Trafford contract but United do hold the option to extend his stay by a further year.

De Gea is one of the highest paid goalkeepers in the world and has been in sensational form over the past year or so, cutting out the niggling errors that had seen many call for academy graduate Dean Henderson to succeed him as United's number one.

The Spaniard intimated to United's website in December that he wants to remain at United long-term, and 90min understands that the club are ready to sit down with De Gea and his representatives to confirm that his desire.

"Hopefully, there are more years to come and more trophies to come," De Gea said at the time. "More good moments to live. So what can I say? I’m massively proud of what I did for this club and to play for this badge. It’s amazing. I feel maybe in one of the best shapes of my career. I feel very well.

"Maybe some people think I’m older because I’ve been in the game for many, many years but I am still young for a goalkeeper. I’m still learning every day, giving 100 per cent in training, so like I say, hopefully there are more years and more games to come."

United anticipate opening talks with De Gea - who has been at Old Trafford for more than a decade - this year, knowing that any potential contract extension could take him through to the end of his career.

Any new deal is also likely to spell the end for Henderson, with the 24-year-old, who signed a lucrative contract extension at United in August 2020 after a successful two-year loan spell at Sheffield United, having already accepted that he needs to leave to play regular first-team football - either on loan or on a permanent basis.

Henderson almost got his wish of a move on deadline day after Newcastle made an offer, but their bid was rejected and even their offer to send Martin Dubravka in the opposite direction could not get the deal done.
