Manchester United will offer Angel Gomes a new contract worth £30,000-a-week in a last-ditch effort to stop the 19-year-old leaving for free next summer.
The Red Devils academy graduate has played five matches for the senior side this campaign, but it's understood he is refusing to sign a new deal with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side, having been left 'underwhelmed' by the terms previously offered by his employers.
After talks with United reached stalemate in December, it had looked likely Gomes would join another side once his contract expires at the end of the 2019/20 campaign.
However, The Sun claim the Red Devils hierarchy have not given up hope of securing the attacking midfielder's long-term future at Old Trafford, with the club allegedly set to propose new terms that would see his current wages tripled.
United are 'desperate' for Gomes to sign on, and they're aiming to finalise negotiations before the start of March. Solskjaer has been helping the process, assuring the teenager that there is a path into the first-team.
However, it may not be a direct route, with the north-west side prepared to send him out on loan next season, believing the England Under-20 international needs more experience before he's ready to take on a larger role at Old Trafford.
If United fail in their bid to retain his services, a move to Italy appears to be on the cards, while he could likewise join one of the Red Devils' Premier League rivals.
