Man Utd Won't Extend Alexis Sanchez & Chris Smalling Loan Deals & Want Permanent Exits

Manchester United will not extend the loan deals of Chris Smalling and Alexis Sanchez with the club eager to be rid of the players permanently.

Smalling has spent the season at Roma, scoring twice in 34 appearances. Sanchez meanwhile, has been plying his trade for Inter, bouncing back from an ankle injury in October to register two goals and seven assists since Serie A returned.

Chris Smalling has earned plaudits for his Roma performances this season

Both initially signed on one-year loan deals in June which were extended until the end of the domestic season last month. According to Sky Sports, further extensions will not be taking place and United will only allow the players to depart Old Trafford on permanent transfers.

This means that Sanchez and Smalling are poised to miss out on the forthcoming Europa League tournament. Their current loan deals expire after the final Serie A matchday on 2 August with the tournament kicking off several days later.

Roma and Inter are yet to play their Round of 16 ties against Sevilla and Getafe respectively, which were cancelled back in March due to coronavirus. Those fixtures will now be one-legged affairs played on neutral territory in Germany. United have Europa League commitments of their own as they face off against LASK on 5 August and they could take on Roma in the quarter finals.

It is understood that I Giallorossi are keen to make Smalling's loan move permanent and they may have dropped a hint that the Englishman is signing, when they recently posted a photo of the 30-year-old in next season's kit on social media (via Corriere dello Sport).

Inter will likely be similarly eager to sign Sanchez but a stumbling block could be his astronomical wages. The Chilean reportedly earns €14m-a-year at United and Inter a currently paying a small fraction of that.
