Manchester United and Everton in Leighthon Baines swap deal

Sir Alex Ferguson believes United can prise the defender away from Everton for as little as ?8 million, potentially, with United's current left back and French international Patrice Evra going the other way. Although the fee for Baines is likely to rise to ?11 million is Evra was to stay at United or move on to another club.

It is thought that Baines is desperate to play Champions League football and could slot straight into Manchester Unite's European squad for the knock-out stages as he isn't tied to another club in the competition.

Sir Alex knows time is running out for the Red Devils 31-year-old left back who has played on average 50 games a season in the last five years.
