Manchester United have emerged as 'serious' contenders to sign Paris Saint-Germain forward Edinson Cavani on a free transfer this summer.
The 33-year-old's contract at the Parc des Princes expires at the end of this season, and in the current financial climate such a deal will appeal to numerous clubs looking to strengthen their squads without spending heavily.
The Red Devils are in the market for a striker, having allowed Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez to leave without finding a permanent replacement.
According to French news outlet L'Equipe, United are ‘serious candidates' to sign Cavani in the summer, and are confident of beating Atlético Madrid to his signature.
However, they could face competition from David Beckham's MLS side Inter Miami, and the club have already held talks over the possibility of signing the forward, the Mirror reports.
Cavani has enjoyed a hugely prolific seven years with PSG, but has been gradually phased out of the first-team picture this season.

The Uruguayan has started just seven times in Ligue 1 in 2019/20, and angered manager Thomas Tuchel by hosting a birthday party that went on into the early hours in the build up to a league fixture in February.
Both United and Atlético were linked with a move for Cavani in January, but PSG refused to let him depart.
The Red Devils had been poised to splash the cash in the summer, but the coronavirus outbreak has cast doubts over their heavy spending plans.
Borussia Dortmund's Jadon Sancho, who is likely to command a transfer fee in the region of £100m is one of their primary targets, along with fellow English youngsters Jack Grealish and Jude Bellingham.
However, executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has tempered any expectation of lavish spending in the summer following the financial uncretainty triggered by the pandemic.
United may be forced to sell a number of players, including Paul Pogba, to fund any transfer activity this summer.
