Manchester United Prepared to Hand Dean Henderson New Contract This Summer

Manchester United want to prove to goalkeeper Dean Henderson that they see him as a future first-choice goalkeeper by tying him down to a bumper new contract this summer.

The 23-year-old has excelled out on loan with Sheffield United over the last two seasons and is has been tipped as a future England number one by his Red Devils manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

However, given United's decision to hand current first choice David de Gea a lucrative new deal of his own earlier this season, rumours have emerged suggesting Henderson could push to leave in search of first-team football.

David de Gea signed a huge new contract in September

Henderson's profile has risen with each passing week as Sheffield United continue to exceed expectations, and it has been confirmed to 90min that United intend to extend his contract as a sign of their long-term commitment to the Englishman.

This new deal will ensure Henderson is paid like a starting goalkeeper in the Premier League as a reward for his outstanding development in recent years.

Solskjaer is on record saying that Henderson will one day become the starter at Old Trafford, but as De Gea is only 29 years old himself, the Englishman's chance may not come for a few seasons yet.

Henderson has helped Sheffield United become European hopefuls

Solskjaer and the United hierarchy - who are aware that young goalkeepers with his potential are not so easy to find - are contemplating keeping Henderson around next season to operate as De Gea's backup, yet there is an acceptance that only offering him the chance to play in cup games probably wouldn't go down well.

The idea of remaining with Sheffield United on loan for a third campaign has been discussed and is now seen as the most likely option, but United will not be swayed into letting Henderson leave on a permanent basis this summer.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer knows Henderson is a special talent

Henderson, who spent last year out on loan with the Blades in the Championship, has broken through into Gareth Southgate's England team and has been tipped to replace Everton's Jordan Pickford as the starter for Euro 2021.

Alongside Henderson, the plan is also to tie left-back Brandon Williams down to fresh terms which reflect his status as a top Premier League defender.
