Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney says he did not step foot in a wedding

United and England captain Rooney has dominated the headlines since pictures emerged showing him, complete in Three Lions training kit, looking the worse for wear during the international break.

Rooney was reported by The Sun to have been up until the early hours at a wedding in The Grove hotel following England's 3-0 victory against Scotland, and the 31-year-old subsequently ''unreservedly'' apologised to interim boss Gareth Southgate, the Football Association and young fans.

He then fought his corner after United's draw with Arsenal last Saturday, saying ''what's been going on is disgraceful'', that his treatment showed ''a lack of respect'' and that ''enough is enough''.

Speaking to BT Sport 2 on Thursday after the Feyenoord game, Rooney denied he had been at a wedding and said: ''All that's created by people like yourself asking questions now (the criticism he has received).

''I think people in the media (are) making a big deal over nothing

I actually didn't even step foot into the wedding and I think it's a shame that I'm having to talk about it now after such a great victory.''

Rooney netted the opener in the Europa League Group A win against Feyenoord with a delightful chipped finish that took him to 39 European goals for United.

He is also now on 248 goals overall for the club, putting him just one their behind all-time record scorer Sir Bobby Charlton.

Rooney added: ''It's a great feeling to score goals and to score goals for this club

So I'm pleased

I'm sure there's plenty more to come and I'm happy with the win as well as the goal.

''It was a good win

We're pleased we got four goals

I think the second goal killed the game, even though we were in control at 1-0

You never know what can happen.''

Following Rooney's 35th-minute effort, he teed up Juan Mata to double the lead after the break, a Brad Jones own-goal made it 3-0, and in stoppage time substitute Jesse Lingard wrapped up a victory that leaves United second in Group A and needing only a point from their final pool game away against Zorya Luhansk to seal qualification for the last 32.

United boss Jose Mourinho said of Rooney: "It is an amazing achievement obviously and will be even better if he can help to bring to the club the only competition they have never won in their history, which is the Europa League.

"It is not the biggest competition obviously, but let's try, let's push

I know it will be difficult - there are a lot of matches

But let's try to qualify, and if we do in Ukraine, then more matches to come and hopefully more goals for Rooney to score.

"His performance was like the team - good, solid."

Playmaker Henrikh Mkhitaryan came into the United team to make only his second start for United following his summer arrival from Borussia Dortmund, and produced an impressive display.

Mourinho said of the Armenian

"He just needs now to try to replicate this kind of performance in the Premier League

The Premier League is different

He needs one more step.

"Obviously now confidence levels are higher

This performance gives him the right to believe that he can play the next match again and he needs to replicate this kind of performance in the Premier League, with more physicality, more aggression.

"He needs a little bit more of that, but the quality, we know why we bought him

We know that we were buying a player with a high level of technical quality, very intelligent, very bright, the way he reads the game

So good for him, the performance was good."

Feyenoord boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst - whose side are third in the group on seven points, two behind United and three behind leaders Fenerbahce, who they host in their last game - said: "It's of course a result we didn't want

4-0 is a big defeat.

"We could cope with Manchester United, but then the second goal was a big punch for us.

"You know against them you don't get many chances, but we created one or two big chances to score the first goal.

"But after 70 minutes (just after Mata scored), you could see the difference in quality I think

The last 20 minutes was for us very disappointing.

"There's another big game for us ahead."
