Manchester United Turn to Ex-Newcastle Man Salomón Rondón in Search for New Striker

Manchester United really are looking everywhere to identify any possible new strikers, with Dalian Yifang striker Salomón Rondón the latest to move onto their radar.

The Red Devils have been linked to nearly every name under the sun, from Edinson Cavani and Moussa Dembélé to Carlos Tevez and Odion Ighalo, as they look to cover the injured Marcus Rashford.

According to The Times, the club had hoped to strike a deal for AC Milan's Krzysztof Piątek, but now that the Pole is set to join Hertha Berlin on a permanent deal, they have turned their attention to 30-year-old former Newcastle man Rondón.

The belief is that Rondón, who managed 35 goals in 140 Premier League appearances for West Brom and Newcastle, could be available on a short-term deal after the Chinese Super League was postponed because of the coronavirus outbreak.

With no start date set for the CSL season, Dalian may be open to letting Rondón spend the next six months at Old Trafford.

The target man managed five goals and three assists in 11 appearances for the Chinese side last season, and United are understood to see him as an ideal short-term solution who could cover for Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer recently admitted that he wanted a striker who would be prepared to 'break his nose' to score ugly goals, and Rondón certainly fits that mould. The Venezuelan is a powerful forward who rarely shies away from a physical battle, which is what Solskjaer suggested his side was missing.

However, it's Rondón. Does the 30-year-old really have what it takes to cut it at Old Trafford?

United seem to have restricted their options by only looking for loan deals. Given it's the January transfer window, you're not likely to find many top-class options who will be allowed to leave for cheap.

That's exactly why options like Rondón have emerged. Make no mistake about it, United could do a lot worse than Rondón, but they could definitely do a lot better too.
