Marcus Rashford is set to miss the first two months of Manchester United's 2021/22 season after deciding to have surgery on a long-standing shoulder problem.
Rashford has been nursing the knock since November, treating the pain with injections. The forward was ever-present for United last season, making 57 appearances - the second most of anyone in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad.
His form tailed off somewhat towards the end of the campaign and this can perhaps be explained by the injury he was carrying. According to The Telegraph, Rashford is eager to undergo surgery to fix the problem, as he has concerns about how it might affect his long-term movement.
Although he would prefer to undergo the procedure immediately he is not expected to go under the knife until the end of July. Rashford would then have to wait six weeks before returning to training and a further six weeks until he returned to first team action.
Going by this timeline, he would miss his side’s opening eight Premier League matches as well as the opening of their Champions League campaign. It would be bad news for England also, with Rashford set to sit out of their 2022 World Cup qualifiers in September.
It is said he is being urged by the club to reconsider his decision while on holiday. Rashford has only just returned from England Euro 2020 duty. He did not feature as heavily as one might have expected considering his talent, playing less than 90 minutes in total.
His most notable involvement was hitting the post during the penalty shootout in the final. Since then, he - along with Bukayo Saka and Jadon Sancho - have been subject to sickening racist abuse with a mural dedicated to Rashford in Withington even being vandalised.

Thankfully, the abuse has since been covered up by messages of support with a show of solidarity beside the monument being organised for Tuesday evening.
