Marcus Rashford to undergo shoulder surgery & when he could return for Man Utd

Marcus Rashford will undergo surgery on the shoulder injury, with Manchester United expecting him to be out until October as he recovers.

Rashford has been playing with pain in his shoulder since November 2020, and took painkilling injections to get him through the season. He continued playing through the pain at Euro 2020, and after the tournament, United faced a decision on what to do with him.

There were fears that the muscle tear in his left shoulder would become debilitating if not properly addressed soon, and this week the club held talks with the player over when - or if - he would go under the knife to solve the injury.

Both Rashford and United had been cautious as neither want him to be out of action for a prolonged spell. But it is now being widely reported that he will undergo surgery next week, with Rashford expected to be back playing in October.

The fact it's a shoulder injury means Rashford should be able to keep himself running while he recovers, meaning it shouldn't take him too long to get back up to speed on the other side. It's hoped that surgery will curtail the problem once for all.

The 23-year-old was a key player for United last season, scoring 21 goals and registering 15 assists in 57 games across all competitions. He didn't actually start for England at any point at Euro 2020, but was a regular off the bench.

The surgery means Rashford will at least miss United's first seven league games of the season, while the clash with Everton on 2 October may also come too soon.

The 16 October visit to Leicester, on the other side of the international break, looks a realistic target if that one comes too soon.
