Mason Greenwood in Line for England Call-Up After Man Utd Breakthrough

Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood could be handed a first call-up to England's senior squad for the Nations League clashes with Iceland and Denmark in September.

The 18-year-old took his season's goal tally to 15 with an impressive brace against Bournemouth at the weekend, playing a starring role as United romped to a 5-2 victory at Old Trafford.

That win further enhanced the Red Devils' chances of qualifying for next season's Champions League, but more importantly - for Greenwood at least - showcased the versatility of the young Englishman as he rifled home sensational efforts with both feet.

Greenwood opened the scoring for United against Bournemouth.

England manager Gareth Southgate has previously committed to blooding youngsters at senior international level, should he and his coaching staff feel players are ready to step up after first team exposure, and The Athletic's David Ornstein has stated that Greenwood is now on the manager's radar.

The left-footed inside forward, who has drawn comparisons to Robin van Persie for his playing style and the crispness of his strike, could be joined by Sheffield United goalkeeper Dean Henderson, Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden and Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka in the squad - all of whom have impressed since the Premier League restarted in June.

All four players are unlikely to have entered Southgate's thoughts previously, with EURO 2020 due to have taken place this summer. But the competition's postponement until next year is an opportunity for the former Middlesbrough boss to reassess his options, with one eye very much on the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

One thing that could work in Greenwood's favour is that the majority of England's wingers - on both sides - are predominantly right footed, so his ability to strike the ball cleanly with both would provide much welcome versatility.

Gareth Southgate has vowed to give young players like Declan Rice a chance to impress.

He also possesses a tremendous turn of pace, and has confidently led the line for United at times this season, predominantly in the Europa League.

Trent Alexander-Arnold, Declan Rice and Mason Mount are three of the most high-profile young player success stories of Southgate's England reign so far, while Fikayo Tomori and Callum Hudson-Odoi have also been given opportunities to impress.

So it would be no surprise to see Greenwood called up if he carries on, particularly to Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer - who claimed the 'sky is the limit' for the teenager recently.
