Mason Greenwood: Police granted more time to question Man Utd forward

Greater Manchester Police have been granted more time to question Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood after his arrest on suspicion of rape and assault.

The 20-year-old was detained on Sunday following allegations made by a woman on social media that included the release of photographs, video footage and an audio recording.

United have already announced that Greenwood will not return to training or matches until further notice, effectively suspending him from the club, and police have now confirmed they have been granted additional time for further questioning.

"Detectives have been granted additional time to speak to a man in his 20s who is being held on suspicion of rape and assault of a woman," GMP said.

"The suspect was arrested yesterday afternoon and remains in custody. Inquiries are ongoing and the victim is being offered specialist support."

In addition, the force said: "We remind people to avoid any commentary or sharing of images that could compromise the victim's right to lifelong anonymity, or risk prejudicing a live investigation with active proceedings."

Greenwood, who made his debut for Manchester United in 2019 and is contracted to the club for another three years, has been sponsored by Nike for most of his career, but they have stated that their partnership is on hold while they monitor the police investigation.

“We have suspended our relationship with Mason Greenwood," a spokesperson for Nike said in a short statement. "We are deeply concerned by the disturbing allegations and will continue to closely monitor the situation.”
