Ferguson:

"Wayne's second-half performance showed he was right back to his best.

"He made the second goal and had a hand in almost every move.

"The two games he has just played for England have probably helped him and got him to the tempo of the game and, together with Louis Saha, he proved to be a real handful.

"The plan was to give Ryan half an hour but I wasn't confident at half-time and he was keen to go on and help us.

"We changed the system, had a go for it and we have done well to come away with a result.

"Wayne and Saha are a real handful up front. With Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes behind them it always gives you a chance. That was Wayne's best performance of the season, no doubt.

"I saw signs of it coming back and the two internationals helped bring him back to the right pitch of his game."

Wigan manager Paul Jewell:

"There is no getting away from the fact they battered us in the second-half.

"Once Ryan Giggs came on, they changed their shape to 4-4-2 and annihilated us. They could have got two or three before the equaliser.

"Wayne Rooney is a fantastic player, who would get into any team in the world.

"Anyone who has concerns about Wayne Rooney does not know the game. If you have a modicum of football nous, you will know that even if he is not playing at his best, he is still a world class player and any team without him is a lesser team."
