MATCH QUOTES

Ferguson:

"I wasn't confident at half-time, you hope can change the performance but I thought it was going to be tough as Wigan are a difficult side to play against. I think we've done really well to come away with the result. Wayne's second-half performance, and the whole 90 minutes, he was right back to his best. He and Saha were a real handful. There were some signs he was coming back and the two internationals have helped him to bring to the right pitch and we saw that today. We've done our job well. We played some really good stuff and there is good momentum in the team at the moment.

"The change in formation was a big factor. Wayne produced a great performance in the second half after we moved him into the middle. Ryan made a real difference when he came on. I was planning to give him about thirty minutes or so but he was keen to get on and I decided to change things at half-time. I thought all the front players were a real handful in the second half and we could have scored a few more goals.

"Ole's doing very well. He's got five goals now and if he carries on like he is doing, and I'm confident will do, he could get us twenty goals this season."

"Wayne had a hand in almost everything we did in the second half, and throughout the ninety minutes I thought he was excellent."

Saha:

"Ryan is the type of player who can scare the opposition. We started to pass the ball a lot quicker after the break and that helped us to create more chances."

Vidic:

"He did really well. We had not done very well in the first half but started the second much better and from that moment I was always confident we would win. What we must do now is repeat the second-half performance against Copenhagen and Liverpool because they are two important games we need to win."

Wigan defender, Fitz Hall:

"It only takes Rooney a minute to do something special and you saw in this game he [Rooney] had plenty of confidence. When Giggsy came on it gave him a bit more confidence and he started to get control of the ball as well. In this game, they only had to change one player and they all raised their game and switched it on in the second half. If they can do that, there are not many teams who can stop them in this form. United can stay the course. They have got world-class players and you would be an idiot to write them off."

Paul Jewell:

"In my opinion he's the best player in the world.

"I just can't believe what people have been saying about him. But I don't think he cares less. He won't care what I say, what you say or what the television people say. He's got such strong belief in himself it doesn't matter to him. He couldn't give a toss.

"They look sensational, goals all over, unbelievable movement. With Ruud van Nistelrooy gone they're sharing the goals more. Rooney's showing his true colours again. Giggs was incredible. Once they went to 4-4-2 they battered us, absolutely annihilated us.

"There is no shame in being beaten by a better team but I have to look deeper than that. We have to become more difficult to play against because we are buckling under pressure a little bit. We have always been known for our resilience but just now, we are a bit milky. It is up to me and the staff to pull things round because if I don't get it right, no matter what nice things the chairman says about me, I will get the sack."
